Understanding the UK Skilled Worker Visa Process

Relocating to the UK for work is a life-changing opportunity, but navigating the immigration system can often feel overwhelming. The Skilled Worker visa is the primary route for international professionals looking to build their careers in Britain. While the rules can seem complex, understanding the basic framework is the first step toward your new life.

At Telstra International, we guide our candidates through this journey every day. Here is a clear breakdown of the essential requirements and steps you need to know to secure your UK work visa.

1. The Essential Requirements

To be eligible for a Skilled Worker visa, you must meet a few mandatory criteria set by the UK Home Office:

  • A Valid Job Offer: You must have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer that holds a valid sponsor licence.

  • Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): Once offered a job, your employer will provide you with an electronic record called a CoS. This unique reference number is required for your visa application.

  • Skill Level: The job you are offered must be at or above the minimum required skill level (generally RQF Level 3, which is equivalent to A-levels).

  • English Language Proficiency: You must prove you can read, write, speak, and understand English to at least level B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale.

2. Meeting the Salary Threshold

The UK government sets minimum salary requirements to ensure international workers are paid fairly. You will generally need to be paid at least the general salary threshold or the "going rate" for your specific profession—whichever is higher. There are some exceptions where you might be paid less, for example, if you are a recent graduate, under 26, or working in a shortage occupation like healthcare.

3. The Application Timeline

Once you have your Certificate of Sponsorship and all your supporting documents (like your passport and English test results), you can submit your application online.

  • If you are applying from outside the UK, you can usually expect a decision within 3 weeks.

  • Processing times can vary depending on your location and whether you use priority services, which can reduce the wait time to just a few days.

4. Can You Bring Your Family?

In many cases, yes. The Skilled Worker visa allows you to bring your dependent partner and children with you to the UK, provided you can show evidence of your relationship and meet the financial requirements to support them upon arrival.

Your Partner in Relocation Immigration rules are strict, but you don't have to figure them out alone. At Telstra International, we partner with licensed UK employers and support our candidates from the first interview all the way to visa approval and relocation. We make sure you have the right documents and understand every step of the process.
